Choleast (red yeast rice powder) is derived from Monascus purpureus WENT, an organism grown on rice. After centuries of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it was discovered that red yeast rice is a potent inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductase), the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. The fatty acids, phytosterols, isoflavones, and proteins in Choleast help maintain a healthful balance of cholesterol and related blood lipids in the body.
Dr. Edelberg’s comment: Red yeast rice is molecularly very similar to the statin drugs–so much so, in fact, that the pharmaceutical industry tried unsuccessfully to get it pulled from health food store shelves. It is sold as red yeast rice extract in the product Choleast, and the usual dose is one or two capsules twice daily. I especially like that Thorne Research has added a small amount of Coenzyme Q10 to the Choleast formula. This is extremely important, since statin drugs and their “mimics,” like red yeast rice, deplete Coenzyme Q10, an anti-oxidant and heart protector..
IMPORTANT WARNING! Since red yeast rice extract acts in a similar manner as prescription statin drugs, it is essential that you be supervised by your physician while taking this product. Periodic blood tests and examinations are essential.
